Los Animas Rio de Perdidos “The River of Lost Souls” originates from snowmelt high in the San Juan Mountains above Silverton, CO. and flows through spectacular scenery all the way to its junction with the San Juan River below Farmington, NM. Flows in the Animas are heavily influenced by the yearly snow pack. During the spring months, the river runs as high as 7500cfs.to 8000cfs. The spring-run off usually begins early April and ends in mid to late June.

Once the water clears excellent fishing can be found along many stretches of the river. Due to the long-term effects of mining pollution, the animas above Rockwood to its headwaters are currently under going a restoration program. The rivers fish population is showing signs of recovery but most public fishing is done south of Hermosa. This does not mean that the fishing above Rockwood is not spectacular.. Be sure to check the regulations and maps pages, which will identify boundary areas.
